Simple Tips to a Healthy Breakfast
5 minute read
A healthy breakfast is the most important meal of the day – but why?
Here are some benefits of starting the day with a healthy breakfast;
- Breakfast provides you with sustained energy for the whole day,
- Breaks the overnight fast, and is the first nutrition signal your body receives post-sleep
- Helps to balance blood sugar, hormones, and mood,
- If you’re a caffeine drinker first thing, carbs will help to ‘absorb’ it to reduce the jitters.
These benefits come from not just any breakfast, but a healthy breakfast. Here is how to create one for yourself;
What to include in a healthy breakfast;
First of all, you want to include each macronutrient – some fat, protein, and carbohydrates (and of carbohydrates, you want to include some fibre). Here are sources of each of those;
- Protein sources include whey protein, meat, eggs, and Greek yoghurt
- Carbohydrates sourced include oatmeal, rice or rice porridge, sourdough toast, muesli, fruit, or a type of flour like buckwheat in pancakes or waffles
- Fats include olive oil, grass fed butter, avocado, full fat diary, nuts/seeds, and 70%+ dark chocolate
- Fibre includes any whole grain or vegetable (and in some cases, fruits).
If you include one of each category, you have your healthy breakfast.
If you fast, rely on coffee, or eat sugar without protein or fats, you can be sure to hit that 3pm slump or find yourself bingeing on junk because your body does not have what it needs to function efficiently.
